Climate Thailand lies in a tropical zone and shares the same weather patterns as most Southeast Asian countries situated just north of the equator. An understanding of these weather patterns can help you choose beforehand the season best suited to your participants.

Monsoons, not latitude, determine the seasons in Thailand. Monsoons are seasonal winds that change direction during the year as a result of differences in temperature and pressure between land and sea.

The climate of Thailand varies widely from region to region. Rainfall patterns and temperature levels described apply only to the central plains, including Bangkok and the north i.e. Chiang Mai. These insular regions are subjected only to the summer monsoon, which brings three distinct seasons: dry (Nov – Feb), hot (Mar – Jun) and rainy (Jun – Nov). Variations within seasons and between years can slightly alter these monthly guidelines.

The exception to the ‘one monsoon, three seasons’ rule is the peninsular world of southern Thailand, especially the southeast coast, which experiences both summer and winter monsoons. Winter rains – uncommon in the north – are caused by winds from the northeast passing over the Gulf of Thailand and thereby accumulating humidity. As a result of alternating monsoons, which also dictate temperatures, southern Thailand has just two seasons - wet and dry.

The climate here is similar to that of its peninsular neighbor, Malaysia, which experiences few variations between seasons. Year round, the area is warm and humid, with rain falling at any time but heaviest during the summer months and during the so-called ‘dry season’ months of December and January.

There can be significant differences in rainfall levels between the west and east coasts depending on the strength of the storm. Travelers on Koh Samui surprised by sudden showers might find drier conditions across the peninsula on Phuket island.

Social Customs Thais are tolerant, easy going people with ready smiles and appreciate courteous behavior. They hold great reverence for the monarchy and their Buddhist religion, and will take offense at anyone making disparaging remarks about either institution. Visitors to temples or royal palaces must always dress with appropriate modesty. Females should not attempt to touch or hand anything directly to Buddhist monks as this is against their precept of celibacy.
Traditionally, Thais greet each other with a wai (pressing the palms together at the chest). If a Thai offers a wai to you, then it is proper to return the gesture. Please avoid touching people on the head as Thais dislike this action, believing the head to be the most sacred part of the body. It is also inappropriate to use the foot for pointing.

Cuisine The cuisine is unquestionably one of the highlights of a visit to Thailand. Forty years ago, Thai food was largely unknown outside the country. Today, the dramatic proliferation of Thai restaurants in every corner of the planet has made Thai food one of the most popular cuisines in the world. However, tasting authentic Thai food in the country of its birth, with all the regional variations and fabulous seafood, is an experience well worth savoring.

Dress Code Light, cool clothes are sensible and a jacket is needed for formal meetings and dining in top restaurants. Shorts (except knee-length walking shorts), sleeveless shirts, tank tops and other beach-style attire are considered inappropriate dress when not actually at the beach or in a resort area.

Electricity 220v, 50Hz. Two types of socket outlets are used in Thailand for the following types of plug: (a) plugs with 2 flat parallel blades and (b) plugs with 2 round pins - commonly known as a Europlug.
Some outlets are combination sockets and can accept both types of plug.

Official Holidays
January 1- New Year’s Day
March 7 - Maka Bucha Day
April 6 - Chakri Day
April 13,14,15 - Songkran Day
May 1 - National Labor Day
May 5 - Coronation Day
June 4 - Visakha Bucha Day
August 2 - Arsarnha Bucha Day
August 12 - Queen’s Birthday
October 23 - Chulalongkorn Day
December 5 - King’s Birthday
December 10 - Constitution Day

Health Advice Vaccination certificates are not required for visitors unless coming from or passing through a designated “contaminated” area. Bangkok and other major Thai cities and resorts have excellent medical facilities and most hotels have doctors on 24-hour call.
Bangkok has numerous clinics and hospitals catering for all conditions. Major public and private hospitals are equipped with the latest medical technology and internationally qualified specialists. Almost all pharmaceuticals are widely available.

Tipping Tipping is not standard practice in Thailand, although it is becoming increasingly common. Many larger hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill. You should tip at your own discretion, however for FIT clients we recommend you allow $30 per day for your driver and guide (more for groups).

Communications
Emergency calls: 191 Police / Fire / Ambulance
Police: 191
Fire Brigades: 199
Ambulance: 1554
Tourism Police (English, French, and German spoken): 1155
Directory assistance: 1133
Dialing code from UK to Bangkok: 00 66 2 + local number
Dialing code from UK to Phuket: 00 66 76 + local number
Dialing code from UK to Chiang Mai: 00 66 53 + local number
Mobile phones with international roaming are fully operable in most parts of Thailand – however, some of the more remote areas may not have a network signal. Local SIM cards are available at a reasonable price whilst in Thailand.

Taxes Goods and services in Thailand are subject to a value-added tax of 7%. International visitors are entitled to refunds of VAT paid only on goods purchased at shops, department stores and other retail outlets displaying “VAT Refund for Tourists” signs. When making these purchases, ask the shop fill in the tax refund application form. Prior to check-in at the airport for departure, present the completed VAT refund form, plus passport information, tax receipts and your purchases to a customs officer for inspection. Certain luxury goods (jewelry, watches, gold ornaments, etc) must be shown to an excise official at the VAT refund office in the departure lounge.

Safety Advice New York is America's safest large city, but visitors should still use common sense to protect themselves and their property. Be aware of your surroundings, and make sure to always use licensed, reputable businesses for any services you need. For example, don't hail livery cabs (as opposed to taxis) at the airport, and don’t rent bikes from companies that seem suspicious. Your hotel concierge should be able to answer questions on this topic and will be helpful if you need more information about neighborhoods in the five boroughs. 311, the City's official information hotline, is also a useful resource.

Geography New York City is composed of five boroughs. Whilst Manhattan (13.4 miles long and 2.3 miles wide at its widest, except at its northern and southern tips) and Staten Island are islands, Brooklyn and Queens are geographically part of Long Island, and the Bronx is attached to the US mainland. The islands are linked by bridges, tunnels and ferries.

Travel Seasons
Peak - mid-March to December, with the first two weeks of December being the busiest.
Off-Peak - January to early March.

Local Laws When going out for a night on the town, you should be aware that the drinking age in NYC — and throughout the United States — is 21, and smoking is banned in public places throughout the City including bars, restaurants, subways and taxis. Cigar smoking is permitted at cigar bars that register with the City. In NYC, people who are 18 or older can purchase cigarettes and tobacco.

Public Transportation / Accessibility
Subway - Single ride $2.50, Put $10 or more on your card and receive a 7 percent bonus, weekly unlimited car $29, Month $104
Buses -$2.25
Ferries - Staten Island Ferry is free, New Jersey Ferry $10 for adults, $8 for children.
New York is one of the most accessible cities in the world for visitors with disabilities. All public transportation, museums and major attractions are accessible, though not all historical sites are totally accessible and many older hotels and public facilities are in the process of conversions to meet ADA standards.

Dress Code In public buildings and restaurants the dress code is casual and in general no jacket and tie is required. Dress varies in the theaters contingent upon the current show and the day of the week. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.

Currency Exchange Foreign currency exchange is available at a few major currency houses. Guests will also find currency exchange desks at the three area airports. An increasing number of the city's hotels also provide currency exchange as a guest service.

Tipping The rate for individual diners is 15%-20% in restaurants and also for taxis, 10%-15% in bars. In restaurants, locals just leave double the tax as a tip. Large parties at restaurants will frequently find their gratuity already included. Give hotel maids between $1 and $10 per day, porters at least $1 for each bag and the doorperson $1 for hailing a cab. Tips for other service personnel, such as theater ushers, tour guides and coat-check staff are always appreciated.

Communications
Emergency Number: 911 for Police, Fire and Ambulance service
NYC government agencies and any questions or requests about city services (non-emergency): 311 or 212-NEW-YORK (639-9675)
Directory assistance: 411
Dialing code from UK to New York: + 011 44 20

Taxes New York City's 8.375% sales tax applies to almost everything you can buy retail, including restaurant meals. Clothing and footwear costing less than $110, prescription drugs and non-prepared food bought in grocery stores are exempt from sales tax. Sales tax applies to hotel rooms, plus a 5% hotel tax and $3.50 hotel fee per room per night.

A travel insurance policy that covers theft, loss and medical treatment is recommended. Make sure the insurance also covers any activities that you will be undertaking during your stay in Nepal such as trekking, rafting, etc.

Visitors do not need any particular immunisation to visit. Vaccinations for cholera, meningitis, tetanus and diphtheria, typhoid and gamma globulin should, however, be considered. It may be a good idea to get a complete check-up before departure.

Language The region has a local language known as Nepalese. English is widely spoken throughout the country. Guides and travel professionals offer services in most major international languages.

Communications
Telephone, fax, telex and telegraph services are available at the Nepal Telecommunications Corporation at Tripureshwar. Hotels and private communications centers provide long distance telephone facillities.

Official Currency Moroccan Dirham (MAD; symbol Dh) = 100 centimes.
Notes are in denominations of Dh200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of Dh10, 5 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 centimes.
Credit cards: Most major credit cards are accepted in larger restaurants, hotels, guest houses and the occasional shop in the souks, with Visa and MasterCard being accepted most widely.

ATM: Cash can be withdrawn from ATMs in larger towns, although service in smaller towns can be erratic. Most major hotels now have reliable ATMs.

Travellers cheques: Traveller's cheques are accepted in some areas but are not advised, as the exchange can be problematic and it can be difficult to find a bank able to cash them, although some of the main tourist hotels offer this facility.

Banking hours: Mon-Thurs 0830-1230 and 1500-1830, Fri 0830-1200 and 1500-1830.

Currency restrictions:
IMPORTANT NOTE The import and export of Moroccan Dirhams is prohibited by law.
Moroccan Dirhams can only be obtained in Morocco. Foreign currency may be exchanged at an official Bureau de Change (identified by a golden sign) at the airport on arrival, at a bank or at a hotel. A hotel is the best option as they exchange money at the same rate as banks and do not charge a commission.
All local currency must be reconverted prior to departure. Be sure to keep the exchange receipts for change back to foreign currency ONLY AT THE AIRPORT when leaving Morocco. A rule of thumb is not to exchange too much money at one time.

Warning - changing money in the street is illegal. The Euro and US Dollar are widely accepted, even sometimes preferred.

The import and export of foreign currency is limited to amounts equivalent to £10,000 and must be declared on arrival and departure.

Climate Morocco is dominated by the Mediterranean climate made temperate by the influence of the Atlantic Ocean in the northern and southern parts of the country. In the centre, the climate is continental with significant temperature differences. The Atlas region is moist with frequent snow falls. In the South, a desert climate prevails.
The rainy season between November and April is something of a misnomer, bringing only occasional light rain.

Current weather information can be checked at www.moroccoweather.com

Local Time Morocco is on GMT all year.

Electricity 220 volts AC, 50 Hz for newer buildings / 110 volts AC, 50 Hz for older buidlings. European-style, two-pin plugs are standard.

Ramadan hardly affects visitors to Morocco, which is one of the very few Muslim countries where this has no effect on programmes. There are no alcohol restrictions for visitors. Moreover, the city is even busier and livelier both daytime and in the evenings, compared to the rest of the year. Djemaa El Fna Square is generally not busy between approx 15 minutes before sunset and 45 minutes later, so this is good opportunity to get changed and freshen up before dinner.
